Akiko Tsutsui Gingrich, age 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 4, 2025. She was born on July 23, 1932, in Japan, and made her home in San Angelo, Texas, after moving there in 1970 with her beloved husband, who preceded her in death.
Akiko lived a full and joyful life. She worked for over 20 years at Chadbourne Street Deli, where she found great pride and happiness in preparing food and serving her community. Her passion for cooking was matched only by the joy she found in simple pleasures—playing cards, bingo and shopping, through which she formed lasting friendships.
It was through these pastimes that Akiko met Janie and Richard Rodriguez, who became her chosen family. Their bond grew deep and enduring, and Akiko found love, laughter, and a true sense of belonging with them. She is survived by Richard and Janie, their four daughters, two sons-in-laws, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren—each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Akiko will be remembered for her sweet and kind spirit, her quiet strength, and her vibrant personality, all wrapped in a tiny but mighty frame. She brought light and joy to all who knew her, and her memory will be cherished always.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Gentiva Hospice for their compassionate care, and to the dedicated staff of Rio Concho Manor. Special thanks to Doug Hodge, Community Manager, and to Norma and the entire Manor team. Deepest gratitude also goes to Janie Rodriguez, who lovingly served as Akiko’s primary caregiver for the last two and a half years.
In accordance with Akiko’s wishes, there will be no funeral service at this time.
