Antonio Hernandez Obituary

For Antonio “Tony” Hernandez, time was often measured not in hours, but in sunrises over the water and the quiet patience of a fishing line cast just right. On Friday, February 20, 2026, in San Angelo, Texas, that steady rhythm came to a close.

Tony began his working life as an appliance repairman, a trade that suited his mechanical mind and steady hands. Later, he joined the sporting goods department, where his knowledge of fishing was not only useful but genuine. What had always been a personal passion became part of his daily work.

When he was not working, Tony could most often be found at the Spillway, fishing until dusk settled in. He had his preferred spots, places where the water ran just right and where he felt a quiet closeness to God. Whether casting a line alone or alongside his brothers and family members, the time was well spent. Over the years, the local newspaper featured him more than once — sometimes holding a notable catch, other times simply waiting patiently for the next one.

Tony was born in San Angelo on February 3, 1954.  He was the second youngest of seven children.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Precilla Hernandez, a sister, Janie DePaolo, brothers Martin Hernandez and Pete Hernandez, and a grandson, Nicholas Asevedo.

Survivors include his sons, Anthony Hernandez and Dustin Hernandez, of Austin, Texas.  Also, from Austin & cherishing his memory is his former wife, Thelma Hernandez and her two daughters, Amy Reyes (and husband Robert Reyes) and Tina Garcia, whom Tony cared for as if they were his own.  He is also survived by his sister, Ginger Hernandez, of California, and his brothers: Joe Hernandez of Las Vegas, and Ramon Hernandez and wife, Aileen, of San Angelo, and sister-in-law, Noelia Hernandez, also of San Angelo. Other survivors include eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

The Fisherman's Prayer
God grant that I may live to fish until my dying day,
And when it comes to my last cast I then must humbly pray.
When in the Lord’s safe landing net, I’m peacefully asleep,
That in His mercy, I be judged good enough to keep.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. to honor his life.

These arrangements have been placed in the thoughtful care of Gutierrez Funeral Chapels / North.
