Marie R Starks

Marie R. Starks, born Marie Rodgers Richardson on April 8, 1922, in Lockhart, Texas, peacefully passed away on November 7, 2023, in San Angelo, Texas at the age of 101.  She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

Marie is survived by her loving children, Winnie Faye Starks-Butts and William N. “Pete” Starks, along with 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren.  She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.  Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah and Willie Mae Richardson as well as her siblings, Winnie Ella Richardson-Pettis, Grover C. Richardson, Etta Mae Richardson and Elijah Richardson Jr.  She was also preceded in death by her children, Edna Marie Starks-Tyson, Alice Fay Starks, Altha Raye Starks, Gloria Jean Starks-Williams and Earl Leon Kennon Jr.

Marie attended San Angelo Colored School for her primary education and later received her GED Diploma.  She dedicated several years of her life working in private homes before embarking on a 20 plus year career in custodial services at Angelo State University.

Marie was a long-time devoted member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church and later the New Light Baptist Church.  She found solace and strength in her faith throughout her life.

In her free time, Marie loved singing gospel wherever she went.  Her voice touched the hearts of many.  She also had a passion for cooking and prepared delicious meals filled with love.  Fishing was another hobby that brought her joy and relaxation.  Marie actively participated in various community organizations, including the NAACP – San Angelo Chapter and the Blackshear Reunion Alumni.  She also volunteered at the soup kitchen at Wesley Trinity United Methodist Church, where she selflessly served those in need.

Marie R. Starks will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.  Her warmth, strength, and dedication to her family and community will forever be remembered.

Family will receive friends on Friday, November 17, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. at Gutierrez Funeral Chapels, 1002 North Oakes, San Angelo, Texas.  Marie's "Homegoing Celebration" will be on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Gutierrez Funeral Chapels, 1002 North Oakes, San Angelo, Texas with Rev. John Pope, officiating.  Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery, 1100 West Avenue "N", San Angelo, Texas.

The Gutierrez Funeral Chapels, 1002 North Oakes, San Angelo, Texas, is assisting the family with the arrangements for Marie’s final journey.
