Some people leave behind memories. Others leave behind a presence so familiar that its absence is felt in the quiet moments of everyday life.
The space occupied by Rafael G. Peña, 78, of San Angelo, Texas will not easily be filled. His vibrant spirit, unmistakable personality, and the way he connected with those around him will be deeply missed. Rafael was, in every sense of the word, a character.
Rafael Pena, a master sheep shearer whose steady hands and kind heart touched countless lives, passed away peacefully in Camp Wood, Texas on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
Rafael’s life was woven with more than wool, he was a devoted brother to his sisters, Sylvia Pena and Gracie Gonzalez and his brothers, Patricio Pena and Enrique Pena.
Born in the small town of Menard, Texas on September 18, 1947, to Juan Pena and Serapita Garza Pena, Rafael discovered his calling early learning the art of shearing. Over the decades, he became known not only for his skill and speed but for the gentle way he treated every animal in his care. His work took him across ranches and shearing sheds far and wide, where he forged lifelong friendships and earned the respect of fellow shearers and farmers alike.
His story is still being gathered through the memories of those who knew him best. A complete tribute will be forthcoming.
Mr. Peña's arrangements and care have confidently been entrusted to the staff at Gutierrez Funeral Chapels in San Angelo, Texas.
