With humble acceptance of God's will, we announce the passing of our beautiful mom, Sylvia Vargas Martinez, who passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.
Sylvia was born in McCamey, Texas on February 16, 1957, to Cipriano Vargas and Cecilia Arista, and was raised by Ramon Arista. She met and fell in love with her husband, Mauro Martinez Sr. They married on July 26, 1972. Sylvia and Mauro went on to have four children, Mauro Jr. Maura, Mark and Matthew. Sylvia has been a resident of Big Lake for 52 years. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Margaret of Cortona Catholic Church. She loved playing bingo with her friends, especially with her Comadre Dora Villarreal. She loved shopping, going to casinos and being with her family and friends.
She loved caring and spoiling all of her children and grandchildren. Sylvia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, tia and friend. Her legacy of love and faith will continue. She will be forever missed by all who knew and loved her.
Sylvia is preceded in death by her father Cipriano Vargas, Sr., two brothers, Epifanio Vargas and Adolfo Arista and two sons, Mauro Martinez Jr., and Mark Anthony Martinez. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband Mauro Martinez Sr. of Big Lake, Texas, her daughter Maura Martinez and husband Steve Morales of San Angelo, Texas, son Matthew Martinez and wife Estella Torres of Iraan, Texas, grandchildren, Jordan and Haley Morales, Arianna, Zhavia, Eliza and Mila Martinez. She is also survived by her parents Cecilia and Ramon Arista of Crane, Texas, sister Sarah and Paul Lee Smith of Mississippi, brother Cipriano and Sylvia Vargas Jr. of Crane, Texas, brother Tony Vargas, sisters Barbara Vargas and Diane Bennett all of Ft. Stockton, Texas. She is also survived by numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects on Sunday, October 2, 2022, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Gutierrez Funeral Chapels, 1002 North Oakes Street., San Angelo, Texas, with the Recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 3, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Margaret Cortona, 107 East 1st Street, Big Lake, Texas with Rev. Bala Anthony Govindu officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at Glen Rest Cemetery, Texas Hwy. #137, Big Lake, Texas.
